He completed an M.B.A. at Mississippi College before earning a Ph.D. from the University of Memphis. Since joining MTSU’s faculty in 2000, Roy has been recognized for his impact in the classroom by the Marketing Management Association with the Master Teacher Award (2007) and by MTSU with the Outstanding Teacher Award (2008).

A past winner of the University of Tulsa Outstanding Teacher Award and the College of Arts and Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award, I've received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Littauer Foundation, the Earhart Foundation, and the Koch Foundation, and have lectured in Israel, France, England, Romania, Brazil.

Richard Eugene Vatz (born December 21, 1946) is a professor of Rhetoric and Communication at Towson University. Vatz is a Faculty Fellow at the Eastern Communication Association and has been honored by the National Communication Association through his 2012 acceptance in the “Teachers on Teaching” Seminar as well as a separate seminar on his new books (see below).
