Since joining MTSU’s faculty in 2000, Roy has been recognized for his impact in the classroom by the Marketing Management Association with the Master Teacher Award (2007) and by MTSU with the Outstanding Teacher Award (2008).

A past winner of the University of Tulsa Outstanding Teacher Award and the College of Arts and Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award, I've received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Littauer Foundation, the Earhart Foundation, and the Koch Foundation, and have lectured in Israel, France, England, Romania, Brazil.
The outstanding teacher makes paths for students to interact with the content and build their knowledge of it. When a new idea arises in class, or when an unexpected question or misconception occurs, the outstanding teacher is able to redirect the discussion, bring to light important issues, and incorporate the new idea without losing focus of the goal.

Awards: Results are announced in May. Students judged for superior writing are awarded a superior writing certificate and letter which are provided to the nominating teacher to present to the winning student. In addition, their name and school’s name appear on the NCTE website.
MTSU alumnus Tom Provow (B.S. ’78), current president of the MTSU Foundation, also honored 19 more MTSU professors Thursday for their achievements. Richard Eugene Vatz (born December 21, 1946) is a professor of Rhetoric and Communication at Towson University. Vatz is a Faculty Fellow at the Eastern Communication Association and has been honored by the National Communication Association through his 2012 acceptance in the “Teachers on Teaching” Seminar as well as a separate seminar on his new books (see below).
